The Beauty in the Land of the Squatters
By Tiffany Thomas

Carla MichelleCarla Michelle lives off of the main road that travels around Montero; it is a divide that separates the country landscape and the inner city. There is a steep slope that slides down arriving from the inner city to a great plain which becomes a lake every time it rains. Looking out to the land it is filled with the typical beautiful green scenery of the area dotted with shacks and small houses. The people who live here do not own the land nor are they renting. Most of the families that live off of the main road are squatters therefore subjected to lower living conditions, poorer health and inevitably malnourishment. This is where Carla Michelle lives. She has been taking Power Flour for 12 weeks and has gained 2 pounds even though she has been sick for 6 of those 12 weeks. Her mother has told me that she is more alert and active and her appetite has increased. With more time, we believe Carla Michelle can be healthy and with a much better chance at staying that way.
