The feeding centers created in the two neighborhoods feed 240 children daily and provide multiple vitamins, anemia treatment and parasite treatment. Dental hygiene is an additional focus of these comedors.
Apoyo Escolar: Etta Projects established an after school tutoring program for the children, serving 50-60 children at each site. In addition to help with their homework, students have the opportunity to participate in cultural and recreational activities that are often not included in their regular school curriculum. Over the past five years, we have established small libraries that include books, didactic learning tools, educational games, musical instruments and art supplies. This year two generous Rotarians provided Etta I with a small computer lab!
Self Esteem Groups: Each week a group of adolescents work together to improve self-esteem and participate in fun-filled activities. Different meetings have included: self-esteem building exercises, team-building activities, a gardening workshop, a jewelry making class, and guest speakers on health and hygiene. Throughout these experiences friendships have been formed, values have been strengthened, and confidence has been restored.
PowerFlour Program: For preschool children too young to participate in our Comedors program, Rotary again provided us the answer by giving us a supplement called PowerFlour. This supplement provides for the tiniest of the malnourished in our service area. After several months of working with this supplement we were able to hire one of the moms to be the coordinator of this product in her own community.
